OMEGA Laser Plate™

Omega Laser Plates provide efficient and flexible heating and cooling options for specialized applications.

R.W. Fernstrum & Company has partnered with Omega Thermo Products, the inventor of laser plate technology, to offer this advanced option. Omega Laser Plates, also known as Immersion or Pillow Plates, are heat exchanger plates that can be used in many ways for closed-circuit heating and cooling.

What is an Omega Laser Plate?

Omega Laser Plate consists of two sheets (stainless steel, titanium, exotic metals) that are joined by welding a circle pattern with Omega’s laser welding machines. At the edges of the laser plate, a contour is welded to create a pressure-tight barrier. The plates are hydraulically inflated to create a hollow space through which heat transfer medium can flow.

A Laser Plate design is always custom-made according to desired specifications. For applications requiring immersion plates, we recommend double-embossed plates (plates of the same thickness with both sides having a pillow pattern). For applications requiring the plate be integrated into the wall of a pipe, decking, or storage tank, we recommend single embossed plates (plates of different thicknesses, with only the thinner plate having the pillow pattern). You will receive the plate inflated and, if required, assembled as a complete heat exchanger.

Welding patterns, plate cut-outs, and plate shapes can all be adjusted to meet your specific application needs.

Laser Plate Advantages

Cost-effective due to
  • Low welding costs
  • Thinner materials can be used
  • More efficient use of available space
The Laser Plate welding pattern guarantees
  • High turbulence
  • High overall heat transfer coefficients
  • Reduced deposition (algae, lime, etc.)
Due to the low volume in the plate allows for
  • Lower volumes of heating/cooling fluid
  • Less pump capacity is required
CNC-programmed laser welding machines ensure
  • Any desired shapes, recesses, fastening points, and connections are possible
  • Greater control over the bond between the plates

Pressure
Our laser plates can handle a pressure of more than 1500 psi, depending on the required design temperature. If you have specific requirements, please let us know. Omega’s standard design pressure is 150 psi at 400/-20 °F.

Configuration Options

Single Embossed

Single embossed Laser Plates are composed of two stainless steel sheets with a different material thickness. We require a material thickness ratio of 1:3 to maintain flatness on the product side. The flat product side of the single embossed heat exchanger is used for sanitary product applications. Due to the precise welding process, we can guarantee that no heat tint will occur after welding. The material is welded with the protective PVC in place. Single embossed heat exchangers are mainly used as vessel shell, bottom plates and components for different applications used in the process industry.

Applications for Single Embossed Plates
  • Cooling and heating of all required flat heat transfer surfaces
  • Cooling and heating of structural surfaces

Double Embossed

Double embossed Laser Plates are plates that exist of two sheets with similar material thicknesses. This product will deform on both sides after inflation as no flat side is required for the application. The double embossed product is used for immersion applications, clamp-on applications, and other process equipment like heat recover banks and refrigeration applications.

Applications for Double Embossed Plates
  • Immersion plates
  • Plate banks
  • Clamp-on plates
  • Cooling and heating plates
  • Heat recovery banks
  • General nozzles and flanges statement
